Lake Grand-Lieu is a lake located in France, in the department of Loire-Atlantique. Located southwest of Nantes (the towns of Bouaye and Saint-Aignan-Grandlieu which border it to the north are part of the urban community Nantes Métropole), and about ten kilometers south of the Loire, it s' extends almost entirely on the territory of the commune of Saint-Philbert-de-Grand-Lieu.

Due to the very small slope of the terrain it covers, it is characterized by a very fluctuating surface, a shallow depth, and an operation that evokes that of large shallow lakes such as Lake Chad, than that of most other great lakes of France3. In winter, it is the largest natural lake in France.

The fauna and flora of the lake are remarkable, and it is as such that it is classified as a national nature reserve for the greater part (2,694.60 hectares) 4 and regional nature reserve for its eastern part (655 hectares). 79 hectares) 5. 270 species of birds, 19 species of reptiles and amphibians, 30 species of fish and about 50 mammals populate the site. This is particularly a very favorable environment for European eel. The lake area is home to 250 plant species and 220 algae. Eight of these plants are protected internationally. Most of the lake is covered with floating meadows.

It was classified in 1995 as a wetland of international importance by the Ramsar Convention6.
